![]() In terms of how the game is on Switch, it looks gorgeous and plays fantastically at a constant 60fps with little to no latency, but I was disappointed by the audio quality, which seems to be slightly compressed. It also gives you the option to add it to your Bandcamp account if you use that. This physical release is really nice because not only do you get the completely updated game all on the cartridge, but you get a little art booklet with illustrations of each character and a link to download the exquisite soundtrack in the form of MP3s or FLACs. There's a reason everyone says the game is so good, because it is. Every time you play the game, you feel like you've progressed even if just by a bit, and the memorable and often humourous interactions between the characters encourage you to keep playing. One of my favourite aspects is that it is challenging but not at all discouraging. As a fan of Supergiant's first game Bastion, this really shows you how far they've come in mastering their craft. Everything from the art style to the narrative and core gameplay mechanics is realised to perfection. Hades is an essential game for any fan of action games. And if you detest roguelikes then maybe this one isn't for you, no amount of polish will make you appreciate the game if dying and restarting is a frustrating experience for you. If you're indifferent i would still recommend as the combat and gameplay loop is that addicting that it should entertain you for some time at least. Overall if you enjoy roguelikes then its probably one of the most polished on the Switch. ![]() Enemy encounters feel fair for the most part although at times i went into a chamber and it felt like the difficulty had spiked 50% for no reason and then went back to normal after the next chamber but maybe i just got unlucky. ![]() Thankfully the combat mechanics are refined so well that its fun to hack and slash your way through each room trying to get the next rare upgrade to make your build more powerful. I think you have to enjoy roguelike games at least a little to really get the most out of it. This loop could become repetitive to some especially when you take into account the amount of times you will die and have to start over. After clearing a certain amount of chambers you'll reach your first boss then the cycle repeats until you reach the next boss after that etc. The rooms can look a little different on each run but it has little impact as once you are done defeating all the enemies there is no reason to explore. Your objective is to escape the underworld through a series of chambers which are essentially enclosed rooms which spawn enemies, once you defeat all enemies in a chamber you can move onto the next one, usually with a choice of multiple doors leading to a specific upgrade path for your skills. To lessen the blow you do rack up various currencies each time you play which can be spent to upgrade permanent skills and abilities for future attempts making things a little easier each time. The gameplay and combat is much more refined than previous SuperGiant games and upgrades feel powerful if you're lucky enough to get the right ones.īeing a roguelike death results in all your progress being lost and having to start from the beginning again. The art design and colour palette is eye candy to look at, full of bright reds, greens, purples and makes using skills and abilities that much more fun. Hades feels like it took the best parts from the developers previous titles and refined and improved on them further. They definitely share some similarities when it comes to art design and the isometric view point. They also made Bastion and Transistor which were okish games in my opinion. ![]() Hades is a hack n slash roguelike from SuperGiant Games.
